The bulk of the settlement including the former ironworks is located to the north of the main road, The River Doon in the heart of Burns Country is one of the most popular fishing rivers in south-west Scotland with salmon and trout fishing in many areas. Generally, the rivers that drain the county flow south and west from the rim of the bowl, converging towards the coast in a series of broad valleys – those of the rivers Garnock, Annick, Irvine, Ayr and Doon. The area is popular with residents, commuters and tourists with attractions including the Doon Valley narrow gauge railway.
