Early History
Industrial Growth (18th–20th Century)
From the late 18th century onwards, Brora developed into an unlikely industrial hub for such a remote Highland village:
Whisky Heritage
The Clynelish Distillery, founded in 1819 by the Duke of Sutherland, became one of the most famous producers of Highland malt whisky. Its older stillhouse later became the short-lived but legendary Brora Distillery, producing a highly prized peated whisky from 1969 to 1983. In 2021, Brora Distillery was revived after almost four decades of closure.
Modern Era
Today, Brora is quieter but retains a mix of local community life and tourism. Visitors come for its sandy beach, golf course, and as a base for exploring Sutherland. The industrial past is still visible in traces of the old mine workings, harbour, and distillery buildings.

Brora lies on the east coast of Sutherland, along the A9, roughly halfway between Dornoch and Helmsdale. Despite its modest size, it has a surprisingly rich industrial and social history.
Early History
Prehistoric & Norse Influence The surrounding area contains ancient remains, including brochs (Iron Age stone towers) and Pictish sites. The Norse were active in the region during the Viking Age, leaving a linguistic and cultural mark.
Medieval Period Brora remained a small coastal settlement, relying on fishing and crofting. The coast was part of the wider Clan Sutherland lands.
Industrial Growth (18th–20th Century)
From the late 18th century onwards, Brora developed into an unlikely industrial hub for such a remote Highland village:
Coal Mining Remarkably, Brora was home to one of the few coalfields in the Highlands, with mining dating from the late 1500s and more formally developed in the 19th century.
Salt Pans Coal fuelled salt production from seawater, giving Brora one of its early industries.
Brickworks & Woollen Mill Local clay and wool were processed in Brora, producing bricks and high-quality textiles.
Power Station In the early 20th century, Brora had its own coal-fired power station—making it one of the first Highland communities with electric lighting.
Fishing & Harbour Fishing, particularly for herring, was also vital, supported by the small harbour.
