Although the Derby Arms was licensed in 1866 only, it was adjoining on the site of an earlier malthouse, which had been pulled down in the middle of the nineteenth century, and replaced by two tenements. From 1649 to the early part of the nineteenth century, the property was owned by the Russell family of Aylesbury, and the documents in this bundle refer to several other Russell properties in Aylesbury. Reference to the Catherine Wheel and the Bear Inn are made in the eighteenth century deeds. For part of its history, the site of the public house decended with Bull Close, which was auctioned in lots between 1853 and 1867. The Derby Arms appears to have been purchased by H. & G. Simonds Ltd. In 1937.
