History

Appletree Dell was first listed on local maps in late 1700s, when it comprised of two farm cottages. In or around 1860 a development occurred and No 4 and the Apple Barn had their roofs raised and nos. 2 and 3 were constructed between the two....

When the Metropolitan railway was constructed in the 1800s, “Squatters Cottages“ began to pop-up all-over Chorleywood Common, constructed by railway workers who as the railway came further out of London, found the distance to return into London became more arduous.

Muntjac Lodge at the bottom of the Dell was originally a Squatter’s Cottage. Around this time the Dell adopted a new name “Tibble’s Dell “as there were some seven or so families of Tibbles exclusively living there. To the rear of the property are outhouses which were also constructed as part of the development. These were originally shared facilities, a bread oven (now not in existence) a WC, connected to a septic tank and now used only by Muntjac Lodge.

Around 1950 the then owner of the Common (the son or nephew of the original owner) sold off all the cottages to his tenants. Today it is in single family ownership, and this will be the first time for over 75 years that the entire Dell is for sale. Chorleywood is where the white bread that we all know and love was originally formulated and processed by a local baker. His daughter who was quite wealthy owned several houses on the Common which she rented out.

Notably no 1 Appletree was rented to the band Crowded House in the early 1980s. The sellers still to date, have New Zealanders turn up to see the groups humble beginnings and given that the whole band lived there it must have been a crowded house!
