Description
Marrs Beck House originally served as the stationmaster’s residence for the Thirsk–Malton railway, which opened in 1853. Later renamed Hovingham Spa Station in a bid to attract additional visitors, the line operated until 1964, after which the property was taken on by the village doctor, who ran his practice from the adjacent buildings until the early 2000s.

While the character of the original brick house remains evident, the property has been significantly extended and redesigned to create the generous family home seen today. The accommodation has been thoughtfully maintained and updated, with all principal living spaces offering notably well-proportioned rooms and an abundance of natural light. On the first floor there are five good-sized bedrooms, each enjoying attractive views over the gardens and open countryside, together with a spacious family bathroom with separate shower.

Occupying a position on the northern edge of this picturesque and well-served estate village, the house is approached via a gated, gravelled driveway that sweeps past a large front lawn and leads to a separate block of three garages with an additional wood store. The gardens continue around to the rear, where an ornamental pond and raised terrace provide an ideal setting from which to appreciate the far-reaching rural outlook.

Location
Hovingham is a destination “Estate” village set in the Howardian Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The idyllic location of the village, perfectly placed as a base for many local activities, has numerous outstanding features, including historic Hovingham Hall, a delightful Saxon Church, Marr’s beck and a lovely playground, all in picturesque settings much appreciated by children and adults alike.

The Hovingham Village Market is run by village volunteers to provide a monthly market with a range of over 50 stalls offering local produce and crafts. Running monthly from February to December, with an additional special Christmas Market on the third Saturday of December. Hovingham also benefits from a village shop and the fabulous Hovingham Bakery.

The market towns of Malton and Helmsley are eight miles equidistant and offer extensive local facilities including a station linking to York at Malton and a variety of local shops, restaurants and cultural offerings. Slingsby and Helmsley both offer very good primary schools with Ryedale School and Malton School for secondary education. Ampleforth College is also within a reasonable distance.

York is 20 miles away and offers more extensive amenities including a mainline station with direct services to London Kings Cross in under 2 hours.
