Charles II at Puckaster Cove – 1675
On 1 July 1675, King Charles II, known as the “Merrie Monarch”, was forced by severe weather to anchor off the Isle of Wight while travelling from France to the mainland. He came ashore at Puckaster Cove and walked along the Cripple Path to Niton, where he stayed for two nights at Niton Rectory with the Reverend Thomas Collinson.
The event is recorded in the Niton Church Register, which notes that the King “came safely ashore at Puckaster, after he had endured a great and dangerous storm at sea.” His brief visit later became part of local folklore and song.
