Description

The Old Vicarage, formerly the vicarage to St Stephen’s Church, was originally built in 1814 and is therefore a Regency property. The front elevation is beautifully proportioned with a fine lead canopy over trellised balconettes and trellised balcony with classical Ionic columns with lozenge decoration.

The house is rich in period detailing which includes fine Regency bulls eye door architraves, exceptional ceiling cornicing and roses, and many of the windows and doors with period shutters.

The property is accessed from Richmond Road via double front doors and a fine projected front porch leading into a grand entrance hall. The ceiling is vaulted in style and is particularly attractive with its central ceiling rose, and to the four corners there are lions with gilded rings.

To your left-hand side is a downstairs cloakroom and to your right a door leads through to a workshop/garden store which houses the Vaillant boiler and pressurised water cylinder. A back door leads to the garden.

Steps from the entrance hall lead through to a further superb hallway via glazed double doors.

To your right is the magnificent drawing room with a central marble corbel fireplace. There are wonderful floor to ceiling sash windows and a pair of French doors lead out to a south facing balcony with views over the garden.

The second reception room is the dining room, again a very impressive room.

To the rear of the house you will find a very spacious kitchen/breakfast room allowing plenty of room to dine. There are a number of windows looking out towards the courtyard garden and two sets of French doors also leading out to the courtyard. There is a comprehensive range of built-in kitchen units and appliances including an integrated fridge, freezer, dishwasher and microwave and a freestanding range cooker.

A door leads down from the breakfast room to the lower ground floor area where there are two large rooms. The first is dressed as a bedroom (5) and the other, which is even more spacious, is an artist’s studio or could even be a sitting room or bedroom 6. There is a shower room to one end and this leads out via a door to the vaults which wrap around one side of the house. Here our client has a wine rack. In addition, off the downstairs hall are the original wine bins where no doubt the vicar would store communion wine.

On the first floor are two super bedrooms, one to the rear of the house and the master bedroom to the front. This bedroom has a range of built-in cupboards and a well-fitted ensuite bathroom. A shower room completes the accommodation on this floor.

On the top floor are two further bedrooms, both of which have large walk-in wardrobes and a further shower room.

Externally

The gardens of the Old Vicarage are beautifully laid out across three different terraced levels in an Italianate style. Our client has a very keen interest in plants and therefore there are fine specimens of acers, a fig tree, quince and four cypress pines.

To the rear of the house is a garage, part open to the courtyard with electric louvered door and plenty of space for a large car and other garden storage needs.

The pretty courtyard off the kitchen faces west and is an ideal spot for an evening drink. In one corner is small stone store and a garden gate out to Richmond Road.
