About this property

This bright ‘Type T2B’ Span house is part of the green Castle Green development in Oatlands, Surrey. Renovated by its current owners, the home has retained a strong mid-century identity, with rich French chevron oak floors and original wide windows. A long private garden extends at the rear, visually blurring with the expansive communal grounds beyond - a hallmark of Span design.

    The Developers

Span is perhaps the most celebrated of all 20th-century residential developers, with many of their buildings throughout the south of England now listed. Founded by architect-turned-developer Geoff Townsend and Eric Lyons (thoroughly schooled in the modern movement, having worked for Bauhaus designer Walter Gropius from 1936-37), their designs sought to bring the tenets of modernism – light, openness, a sense of order – to suburban areas on a domestic scale. The company built 30 housing estates between 1948 and 1984. A bust of Eric Lyons sits within the estate, reflecting his enduring influence and Span's architectural legacy.

    The Tour

The houses that make up the terrace form a visually arresting unit, with geometric external detailing. Framed by thriving beds, this home’s front door opens to a porch with handy full-height cupboards.

An internal glazed door opens to the living room, a delightful space with a large front window overlooking Castle Green’s landscaped setting. This room is open to the dining space and kitchen beyond and has an unobstructed line of sight through to the rear garden. The kitchen has been thoughtfully finished, with white units and a large central island. Appliances include a double oven, and there a space for a washing machine and dishwasher.

At the rear, a door slides open to the garden.

An original staircase with vertical battens ascends to the first floor, which has three peaceful bedrooms. The upstairs hallway is also bathed with natural light, thanks to thoughtfully positioned windows. The principal is at the front and has built-in storage finished with slim vertical timber handles. The remaining two bedrooms are at the rear; the larger has generous mirrored wardrobes.

Open to the roofline, the primary bathroom sits on the first floor and is flooded with light from a skylight. It has mid-century-style square tiles, a red rubber floor, and a bathtub. An additional WC lies at the front of the first floor, off the entrance porch.

    Outdoor Space

Designing homes with strong connections to nature was arguably the crux of Span’s ethos. This home has a generous paved rear garden, with a stately sequoia tree at its foot. There is plenty of space for hosting and dining outside. There are also well-stocked flower beds and a brick-built shed.

Beyond are well-maintained communal grounds, studded with trees and with generous lawns. The estate also benefits from a children's play area. All external areas, including paving, windows, doors and roofs, are maintained through the service charge, which also covers regular repainting of doors, windows, bin stores, and garage doors.

This home also has a private store and a garage. The garage is located in a block and can accommodate a small car.

    The Area

Castle Green is well located within the Oatlands area, close to Weybridge town centre. The town has a good range of shops, pubs, restaurants and transport links.

A short stroll from the flat is Maurice Jones & Sons, a traditional family butcher. Power's is a great place to enjoy hearty brunches and lunches, while The Flintgate is a brilliant pub with delicious food and its own ale. An evening in either Osso Bucco or Cantina 41 will transport you to Italian shores.

The area has an abundance of green spaces. Oatlands Park, Boundary Park, and the expansive Churchfield Recreation Ground are all within easy walking distance. The River Wey has some wonderful walks, westwards towards Woking and eastwards towards Walton-upon-Thames and Hampton. Rhs Wisley is around a 20-minute drive away

There are several schools nearby, including Cleves School. Frequent rail services run from both Weybridge and Walton-on-Thames to London Waterloo in under 30 minutes; both are around a five-minute drive, or a six-minute cycle, from the house.
