The documented history of Donnington Cottage reaches back to the late eighteenth century. Among its past occupants was Commander George Reynolds rn, who as a young mariner had served aboard hms Pandora, the vessel sent in 1790 to recover the mutineers from the Bounty.
The Pandora floundered on the Great Barrier Reef on the return voyage; Reynolds was among those who survived. He retired to Donnington in later life and is buried with his wife in the churchyard of St George's, a short walk from the house. For much of the nineteenth century the house was occupied by Henry and Ann King. Henry served as parish clerk and market gardener; Ann was schoolmistress at Donnington School. The grounds were developed as an orchard and later a market garden, both recorded on the 1875 Ordnance Survey plan of the property.
