Date History:
1593 – Ballingdon Hall was built as a Tudor/Jacobean “prodigy house” for the Eden family, commissioned by Thomas Eden II as a wedding present for his son.
1683 – Following generations of Eden family ownership, the house passed to John Littel after John Eden’s death.
1726–1741 – The property passed through the Eden family before George Sawbridge Littel’s bankruptcy led to its sale, ending almost 150 years of Eden ownership.
1743 – Purchased by John Piper, a Sudbury weaver and silk merchant. His initials and the date “jp 1743” are believed to be carved into the entrance hall fireplace. The property later passed by dowry to the Sperling family.
1945 – Purchased by Mrs Garner, who operated the house as a hotel.
1959 – Sold to John and Angela Hodges, who undertook significant restoration, including reopening historic windows in the north façade.
1972 – The entire house was moved to higher ground on Ballingdon Hill. The move enabled alterations to the north wing, removal of later additions and extensive interior remodelling, including additional bedrooms and bathrooms.
