Description
This striking four-bedroom contemporary house, set on a quiet residential street in Hampstead Village, was commissioned in 2010 and designed by the London practice Brinkworth. Conceived as a modern response to the surrounding Victorian and Edwardian houses, the building reinterprets familiar suburban forms – brick construction, a pitched roof and bay window – in a pared-back and contemporary way.
The exterior is defined by dark brickwork and carefully proportioned glazing. The pitched roof is deliberately truncated, while the flush bay window sits within the brick façade as a subtle reference to neighbouring houses. The upper floors form a solid brick volume, structurally expressed through exposed steelwork, set above a largely glazed ground floor. Below this, a substantial lower ground floor extends deep into the site, creating generous living and entertaining spaces.
Internally the house is arranged across four levels, with a clear sense of vertical connection and light. Large areas of glazing, skylights and terraces introduce natural light throughout and create a strong relationship between the interior spaces and the garden.
The ground floor is centred around an open-plan living room and kitchen, arranged as a bright family space overlooking the landscaped rear garden. A study area sits towards the front of the plan, together with a guest cloakroom.
The lower ground floor provides an impressive additional reception and entertaining room measuring approximately 45 ft in length. This flexible space could be subdivided if required and is served by an en suite bathroom, utility room and plant room. A glazed lightwell introduces natural light and provides a secondary connection to the garden.
The first floor contains three bedrooms, including one with an en suite shower room and private balcony, together with a separate family bathroom.
Occupying the entire top floor, the principal suite forms a private retreat with a freestanding bath within the bedroom, a separate shower room and WC, and direct access to a private roof terrace.
The landscaped rear garden includes a water feature and seating areas, while the front of the house provides gated off-street parking for one car. The house was highly commended by the Architectural Review Awards in 2017.
