Originally based in Zurich, production was moved to Mendrisio in 1943 following an appeal from the Federal Council to help the economically weakened Ticino region. From there the products are shipped all over the world.
The Vinattieri Ticinesi winery, which produces Merlot, is the largest in Switzerland. There are four gold refining factories. Both Italy and Switzerland are major markets for refined gold that is used in the production of watches and jewelry.
