The Gironde estuary is one of the largest estuaries in Europe, and one of the richest in terms of biodiversity and diverse marine cultures. It has a special environmental and heritage identity.

Mortagne-sur-Gironde is a commune of 1,030 inhabitants in south-west France, on the right bank of the Gironde estuary. It boasts a variety of landscapes, both shaped by the estuary and by man. Mortagne, a former principality that was constantly coveted, developed from ancient times thanks to the advantages of its environment. Its port, one of the main ports on the Gironde estuary, was a key factor in its commercial development, before becoming a major tourist attraction.

The town is divided into two distinct areas: The old town (or upper town), which stands on mighty thirty-metre-high cliffs, known as ‘dead’ cliffs because they are no longer washed by the waves of the estuary, but stand back in the middle of the land, leaving vast marshy areas, punctuated by reed beds and criss-crossed by canals, offering a wealth of marsh vegetation.
This part of the town is organised around its church and a few shopping streets, while the port below (also known as the lower town or ‘La Rive’) is lined with former flour mills. Some of the houses have been converted into bars, restaurants and shops, making this part of the town an active economic hub in the summer months.

The rest of the area is mainly made up of forests and a vast plateau rich in limestone, home to intense mixed farming (maize, wheat, oats, sunflowers, as well as vines used to produce famous eaux-de-vies, cognac and pineau des Charentes), which is still one of the commune's strong points today.
Mortagne has preserved a strong heritage and still boasts many remains from the Christian era, making it an atypical and authentic village that attracts many visitors every year. Its history and location make it a stronghold of the villages of the estuary.
