A Brief History of the Port de l’Arsenal:
Straddling two arrondissements, Paris Centre (4th) and the 12th-the Bassin or Port de l’Arsenal (an arsenal stood on this site from the 16th to the 19th centuries) occupies a moat of the Bastille.
Following the construction of the Canal Saint-Martin from 1822 to 1825, which connected the Bassin de la Villette to the Seine, the site became a port.
The canal reduced the distance between Quai Henri IV and Île Saint-Denis by 23 km (the distance was cut to 12 km thanks to the tunnel running under Place de la Bastille).
The canal also served to supply water to residents.
The 600-meter-long port was developed to handle the unloading of wheat (a grain storage facility was built there under Napoleon I), wood, and Burgundy wines transported by boat via the Seine.
This type of transport is no longer in use today; the basin was converted in the 1980s into a marina with 177 berths, complete with a garden.

Environment:
4th Arrondissement – Known as the Marais (Soho) and attracting artists, designers, trendy shopkeepers and students, it is a lively and bustling neighborhood, with lots of trendy bars and restaurants as well as Rue des Rosiers, a centerpiece of Jewish lifestyle. The arrondissement contains the Renaissance style City Hall and Place des Vosges, the historical Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral, the contemporary Pompidou Centre and Ile St. Louis and the Ile de la Cite being the oldest parts of Paris. It is desirable with its little streets, cafes and shops with old buildings and multi-cultural exposure.
