For those of you who do not know Benafim, then please read on: The quieter side of the Algarve. Just a short drive from Salir and Alte, Benafim is one of those traditional Algarve villages that feels wonderfully removed from the busier coastal resorts, while still being within easy reach of Loulé and the coast. Around 19 km from Loulé, the village sits where the Algarve Barrocal meets the foothills of the Serra do Caldeirão, surrounded by rolling countryside, citrus groves, cork oaks and dramatic limestone landscapes.

For lovers of the outdoors, this is a particularly special location. Rocha da Pena, just around 2 km from Benafim, is a protected limestone landscape rising to 479 metres, with spectacular views across the Barrocal and towards the Algarve coastline. The area is popular with walkers and nature lovers, and the Via Algarviana the long-distance walking route crossing the Algarve's interior passes through Benafim itself.

But perhaps the real attraction is the pace of life. Benafim retains the character of a traditional Portuguese village, with its small square, historic architecture, fountains and local gathering places, while nearby Alte, Salir and Loulé provide additional cafés, restaurants, markets and everyday amenities.

For an overseas buyer, Benafim represents something increasingly difficult to find in the Algarve genuine countryside living, a strong sense of place and beautiful natural surroundings, without being completely isolated. If you are looking beyond the beaches and resorts, Benafim offers a glimpse of the Algarve as it once was authentic, peaceful and wonderfully connected to the landscape.
